This article will examine how the globally-recognized top five football leagues have fared this season.

English Premier League

The English Premier League (EPL) is arguably the most popular football league worldwide. The league is also regarded as the most competitive, although the past few years have seen Manchester City dominate it, winning it four times in five years. Man City are again one of the strong favorites to win the league this season, as they are only five points behind table toppers Arsenal. On the other hand, Arsenal has been one of the surprises of the 2022/23 season, given their struggle to finish top four in the past few years.

Another surprise this EPL season is the emphatic emergence of Newcastle United, who, under the tutelage of Eddie Howe, sit third on the premier league table, just two points behind Man City. They have beaten top teams like Tottenham and Chelsea and taken points off both Manchester clubs.

All premier league teams are performing brilliantly in their respective divisions on the European scene this season. All four Premier League clubs have qualified from their Champions League groups, with only Liverpool finishing second. Manchester City, Chelsea FC, and Tottenham Hotspur have all qualified as group leaders. Premier League teams in the Conference League, such as West Ham, are not left behind as they have also qualified as group leaders to the next stage of the competition.

Overall, the Premier League is currently at the forefront compared to the other top European leagues. This is especially evident in the performances of the league’s teams on the European scene this season.

Spanish La Liga

The 2022–23 La Liga Santander season will be the 92nd edition of the league. Until recently, the league has been ranked by FIFA as the number one football league in the world. While La Liga’s performance in Europe this season is good, it is nothing compared to the league’s previous dominance in European competitions. In fact, Real Madrid is the only Spanish team remaining in the Champions League, with Barcelona and Sevilla relegated to the Europa League and Atletico Madrid finishing last in their group.

Although Barcelona has not been brilliant in the Champions League, they have been quite impressive in La Liga. They currently sit atop the league with two points above defending champions Real Madrid, who won their 35th title the previous season.

Italian Serie A

The Italian Serie A saw a lot of criticism, mainly for its one-team monopoly. This is because Juventus was the dominant team in the league, winning it every season in the last decade. However, in the past three seasons, the Juventus monopoly has been broken, and the league is now even more competitive than ever.

Napoli, AC Milan, Juventus, and Lazio currently make up Serie A’s top four. Napoli sits comfortably at the top this season with an 8-point gap between them and the defending champions AC Milan.

On the European front, AC Milan, Napoli, and Inter Milan all secured qualification in their Champions League groups, respectively, with Juventus dropping to the Europa League.

German Bundesliga

When you talk about a monopolized football league, the German Bundesliga is the accurate definition. Bayern Munich is the ten-time consecutive defending champions of the German League, and they look like they are making their titles eleven this season. They currently lead the Bundesliga table with 34 points, 4 more than Freiburg, who sit in the second position.

However, the German clubs are performing well in Europe, as three of the four teams qualified for the Champions League and have successfully proceeded to the next stage of the competition.

French Ligue 1

Although the French Ligue 1 has always been one of the top five leagues in the world, the league has recently grown more in popularity, especially with the signing of superstars such as Neymar, Mbappe, and Messi in the past few seasons.

Paris Saint-Germain is the league’s defending champions and is again the favorite to lift the trophy this season. Paris Saint-Germain currently leads the charts with 41 points from 15 games played, five points ahead of Lens, the second team on the table. Only PSG managed to proceed to the Champions League from the French Ligue 1 in the 2022-23 season. Other teams, such as Monaco, Nantes, and Rennes, remain in the Europa League.

Conclusion

As the new 2022/2023 football season continues, the top five leagues compete for the top spots in their domestic competitions and Europe while entertaining millions of fans worldwide. You can choose the league that interests you the most or follow all of them, but it’s safe to say that you’ll enjoy it.
