In 1985, a group of white residents of Bethal calling themselves the Bethal Sixteen tried to stop the forced removal of black residents from the village, but they were unsuccessful. The Bethal Sixteen were arrested and sentenced to prison, but they were later pardoned by the South African government. Today, Bethal is a symbol of the struggles and hardships faced by black South Africans during the Apartheid Era.
